The UK's National Landscape Discovery Centre with exhibitions, a local food café and a shop specialising in local crafts and produce.
Once a working quarry, the site has been filled with a deep lake (now used by local diving clubs) and landscaped to provide an attractive picnic spot.

Throughout the year there are activity drop-in days. Go along with your friends and family and have a go at some amazing activities. There's no need to book just turn up and have a go.
Walby farm park
Fun for all the family come rain or shine! Walby Farm Park, just 4 miles from Carlisle and the M6 motorway (J44), is a great day out for the whole family. Exciting outdoor play areas, lots of animal friends, including many rare breeds and Cumbria’s biggest indoor play area, there really is something for everyone! Families, schools, groups and birthday parties can all ‘Meet the Animals’, take a stroll along the farm’s nature trail or just relax in our Curly Tails Cafe, open daily serving delicious hot and cold home-cooked food.

The Tea Room serves delicious home-cooked food using local produce,including wonderful seasonal vegetables grown right there in their pond field. Vallum Ice Cream Parlour sells a huge range of mouth watering ice creams including award winning chocolate brownie ice cream. They offer variety bowls for those who simply have to try a bit of everything! They also have a great outdoor children’s play area, wildlife havens, lovely country walks, a smokery and several interesting independent businesses on site! pop along to Vallum for a wonderful day out. Merlin Brae Water Ski Club
A friendly, family-orientated club, situated on Kielder Reservoir, Northumberland. They offer water skiing and wake boarding to members and non-members, beginners and advanced skiers, using fully qualified boat drivers and instructors.
The South Tynedale light railway
Preserved steam and diesel locomotives from Britain and overseas run between Alston Station (875 feet above sea level) and Kirkhaugh, following part of the old Haltwhistle to Alston branch line along the Tyne Valley in North East Cumbria.

We are located in the best position for the central and most complete part of the Wall. Visit the magnificent forts of Housesteads, Chesters and Birdoswald and the tranquil nature reserves of Cawfields and Walltown which are carved into the wall paths.

Once the haunt of marauding Vikings 1300 years ago, nowadays Hexham proudly holds the title of England’s favourite market town – as voted by Country Life magazine. The town centre is filled with winding streets with Hexham Abbey, the keystone of Hexham’s assets, at its hub. Pay a visit also to Hexham’s Old Gaol – an imposing stone cube, built in 1333 as England’s first purpose-built prison. The building’s history – and that of its infamous inhabitants including the Border Reivers – is told in full, gruesome glory across its four floors.

Haltwhistle, the centre of Britain
Haltwhistle is only a mile and a half from our site. Steeped in history and retaining many historical features including old bastle houses dating back to the feuding times of the Reivers, the town now boasts northern friendliness second to none. Pass the time of day in this ‘olde worlde’ town, enjoy the wealth of local characters and the traditional high street which still boasts many family-run businesses.
Set deep in the vast Kielder Forest, is the largest man made lake in Europe. It is one of Britain’s largest nature resorts and is home to the rare red squirrel, deer and some rare birds. Things to do include fishing, boating, waters ports etc. Kielder can sometimes be a nightmare for midges so it's probably a good idea to use a repellent. We have no problem with midges at Herding Hill by the way.
Haltwhistle Leisure centre
Northern England's only remaining outdoor swimming pool has with a slide and a baby pool. You can even hire BBQ's and make a day of it.
A world famous museum telling the story of the people of North East England during the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods. Visit the home farm, Victorian schoolroom or even walk down into the mine! A fabulous day out for all the family

The Twice Brewed Inn
The Inn is set amongst some of the most breathtaking scenery in England and stands in the shadows of Steel Rigg, without doubt one of the most dramatic parts of Hadrian’s Wall. The Twice Brewed is close to all the main Roman sites on the wall – Vindolanda, Housteads and The Roman Army Museum.
It has been awarded the maximum 5 stars out of 5 for food hygiene and a 4 Star Rating with Visit England.
Dave and Sue will welcome you to The Greenhead Hotel which is in the heart of Roman Wall country. Situated close to the Hadrian's Wall path makes it an ideal location for a stop off on the trail or a base for day trips to the Roman Army museum, Birdoswald Vindolanda, Hostels or walk as far along the wall as you like and catch the AD122 bus back which runs regularly in the summer season. Also on the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Cycleway.
We are lucky to have one of the best country pubs within a 5 min walk from the site. Food is served everyday with fine real local ales.
