Things To Do Near Haltwhistle

When staying with us you will get to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of our unique location, however we are also well connected to local amenities and there are plenty of things to do within an hour’s drive of Haltwhistle. Herding Hill Farm is an ideal Haltwhistle caravan park.

Whether you're looking to explore historic landmarks, take part in outdoor activities, spend the day shopping, or simply enjoy nature we can recommend a wide range of things to keep you busy, all within an hour's reach of our Haltwhistle campsite.     

History   

If exploring local history is your ideal leisure pursuit, you will be spoiled for choice when camping Haltwhistle Not only are we located right in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall Country, you will also find numerous historical landmarks and sights of interest close by including the famous forts of Housesteads, Vindolanda and Birdoswald. Carlisle Castle is just 24 miles west of Herding Hill Farm and dates all the way back to 1093. It has been the sight of many battles and even once housed the famous Mary Queen of Scots as a prisoner in 1567. Just 18 miles, also west along the A69 is Lanercost Priory, one of the best-preserved monasteries in Cumbria, dating as far back as between 1165-1174. Both landmarks are English Heritage sites.   

46 miles east just south of Newcastle and Gateshead, is Beamish, the world-famous open-air museum, which tells the story of life in the North East of England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. Taking a tour down the drift mine, visiting the pit village, taking a ride on the tramway and visiting the old sweet shop are just a handful of the many things to do at Beamish. Closer to Herding Hill Farm there is the South Tynedale Railway, at Alston, where you can take a trip on a steam train. Located at Carlisle Lake District Airport, you could also visit the Solway Aviation Museum, which houses a collection of aircrafts, aviation artefacts and displays.

Outdoor and Leisure Pursuits   

Whether you’re looking to make your own fun and enjoy the outdoors, or take part in organised activities, there’s plenty to do within a reasonably short drive of Herding Hill Farm. You could put your bravery to the test in a tree top rope course at Go Ape, Matfen, enjoy fishing, boat hire and water sports at Talkin Tarn Adventures, or head over to All Out Adventures at Slaley Hall to take part in outdoor adventure activities. At Slaley Hall you will also find a luxury spa and 18-hole golf course. A little further north, just an hour’s drive away you could also visit Kielder Forest, where you can enjoy mountain biking, fishing, walking, adventure activities as well as the world famous Kielder Observatory. For the little ones, Walby Farm Park is an all weather attraction that younger children would love. There are also an array of cycle routes and walking trails all within easy reach of the campsite.     

If you prefer something indoors, Haltwhistle Leisure Centre is right on our doorstep and just a 20-minute drive away is Hexham Leisure Centre, with a swimming pool, ten-pin bowling and gym classes. In Carlisle, Newcastle Upon Tyne and the Metro Centre you can find Ten Pin Bowling and Cinemas, along with a wide choice of restaurants. Prudhoe Waterworld is also less than an hour’s drive.     

Shopping   

If shopping is your go to, then just 24 miles to the west along the A69, you will find the historic city of Carlisle, with a shopping centre and high street with your usual high street brands. Then 10 miles north of Carlisle, across the Scottish border is Gretna Gateway outlet retail park at Gretna Green. Alternatively, just 37 miles to the east, also along the A69 or picturesque Roman military road, you will find Newcastle Upon Tyne, which has a large, bustling city centre, packed with high street shops, and also the Intu Metro Centre shopping complex at Gateshead, housing a huge collection of shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities all under one roof.
